I received an advance copy of this book and when I opened the package, I’m not gonna lie, I totally judged the book by its cover. I was afraid that I wouldn’t like it. But because I had committed myself to this review, I immediately started to read it (because I knew if I didn’t start right then, I’d never go back to pick it up).
Despite my distaste for the cover, I was immediately drawn in. Jean Kwok’s style, complete with Chinese idioms juxtaposed with crisp dialogue, bouyant voice and powerful storytelling kept me turning the pages quickly. I didn’t put it down for two days. Literally.
