If you're not familiar with my personal challenge for Hunger Action Month, you can read about it here.
As I'm researching and getting ready for my challenge, I'm learning a lot about the food stamp program: its objectives, its purpose, its uses & restrictions, etc. I'm also learning that the majority of Americans out there who are hungry, don't qualify for the food stamp program because they make "too much money" to qualify. They may make enough money to cover a mortgage, a car payment, utilities and debt payment (school loans, credit cards, etc.) but at the end of the week, they find themselves with only $20 to feed their family, yet they still don't qualify! (Y'all. This resonates with me. It reminds me of when I was struggling to pay for and support myself through college… of the time I had to scrounge for quarters to buy a box of tampons.)
These are the families who truly need the most help.
Therefore I'm going to tweak my challenge slightly by breaking it up into two, two-week intervals. My challenge will start 5 September and end 2 October.
Stick with me… see what lies ahead.
